Publishers, please note: I am the ONLY poetry reviewer at the Winnipeg Free Press, so you can also send me books at the Winnipeg Free Press. However, do NOT send books to both myself and the newspaper. They will simply forward all poetry or poetry-related books to me (including biographies of poets and collections of essays on poetry). If you send books to both myself and the newspaper then I will end up with two copies.

FAQs

For Students

“Will you let me overbook into your course?”
No. Except in exceptional cases, I am not able to accommodate students who want to overbook into any course, for a host of reasons.

“When will I receive my grades?”
You will receive your grades when they are available. Final grades become available when they are approved and released by the university system. I cannot predict this timeline.

“Will you re-grade my assignment?”
No. I already graded your assignment. I take a long time to grade papers (which is why I do not return them quickly), and do not allow my markers to give grades (only make comments). If you believe that I made an error in grading your assignment, submit a written request for me to re-evaluate the assignment, through e-mail. Even if I refuse, this is a necessary step should you decide to appeal your grade.

“Can I re-write and re-submit my assignment?”
No. You already wrote and submitted your assignment. We must move on.

“Will you write me a letter of reference?”
If you are on the website looking for the answer to this question, then you probably won’t get a letter of reference from me, nor should you want one. Surely there is somebody you know better, and who knows you better, than the guy you vaguely recall taking a class with, who you had to re-discover via his website.

For Others

“How do I get a signed copy of one of your books?”
After a mere five years, I finally have made it possible for you to easily buy a signed book from me.

“Will you give me feedback on my writing?”
Yes. However, you have to pay for these services. As an alternative, you could enrol in one of my courses.

“Can I hire you/Can I buy film rights or otherwise license your work?”
Probably. Please contact me with details at jonathan@jonathanball.com

“Do you want to see my remix/Can I remix something of yours?”
YES! You can e-mail your remixes to jonathan@jonathanball.com or mail hard copies to me at the address above. I will post your remixes, when I can.

“Will you review my book?”
Maybe. Please send me your book (see the address above). I can’t promise to read or review your book. It’s more likely that I will read and review poetry than other types of books.

“Can I write a guest post for your site?”
Maybe. I have been hesitant about this because most people who want to write guest posts are secretly trying to advertise something or simply are writers of bullshit. If you are neither, then tell me all about your idea via jonathan@jonathanball.com

“Will you interview me for this site?”
Maybe. If you want to participate in one of the interview series, then please introduce yourself via jonathan@jonathanball.com

“Where can I buy an e-book version of Ex Machina?”
You can’t, sorry. But who knows what the future will bring?

“I bought a print copy of Clockfire and/or The Politics of Knives — how do I get my free e-book?”
Visit the Coach House Books website for the scoop: http://www.chbooks.com/digital

“What company did you use to make your website?”
I buy all my domains and hosting plans through Hostroute, because they are inexpensive and have great customer service. That’s an affiliate link, and so if you end up also using Hostroute then use the coupon code JBALL to get 20% off a hosting account (it doesn’t work if you just buy a domain name and no hosting plan). I should stress that I honestly don’t know much about tech stuff. So, there may be better options, and you should investigate them. If you come back to Hostroute, that coupon code should help. I run WordPress off of my site. I like WordPress because it is easy to update and has a lot of theme options, and is very customizable with various widgets. In the early days, I coded my site by hand in HTML. I don’t recommend that. Use a database content management system like WordPress.

“Can I use your artwork?”
You want to talk to the Jonathan Ball who can actually draw.

“Are you publishing my book, or what?”
You want to talk to the Jonathan Ball of Jonathan Ball Publishers.
