Saleema Nawaz, bloggess

October 31, 2009

There are a few blogs I check every day, and one of them belongs to my friend Saleema Nawaz, best known as the author of Mother Superior, a short story collection published by Freehand Books. Saleema also won the Journey Prize in 2008. Saleema and I go back to a creative writing class taught at the University of Manitoba by Dennis Cooley, where I also met other fine writers who have gone on to publish or who are now in the process of writing fine books.

I don’t know why I check Saleema’s blog every day, because she almost never posts. Which is a shame, since her posts are often great. I can’t harass her about this, because she still updates her blog more often than me. Anyway, I decided that in November I am going to do something I always talk about doing — finish construction on this website. I want the site to be (1) a place people can come for actual content (articles, interviews, poems, stories) and (2) something I can use to promote myself as a writer (since I need extra work to pay back those student loans, and since my first book is published now) and (3) a resource for my students (now that I am teaching creative writing and plan to continue to do so).

One of the things I want to do, as well, is get in the habit of posting on this blog. In the past, Saleema and I have thrown around the idea of posting every day for a month, and seeing if that does the trick — being accountable to one another, and banding together in blog solidarity. Well, November will be the month. Saleema says she may not be able to keep up with a post each day due to writing deadlines, but she’ll do her best. The same goes for me. Whatever the frequency, it can’t be worse than our current respective averages.

So if you’re reading this blog, start reading Saleema’s blog too. And if we aren’t posting every day during November, harass us both in the comments fields.  And if you have a blog, why not try posting every day during November (if you aren’t already doing so)?

Thanks, Jon! You’re already off to a strong start — three posts already?! Don’t burn out early…

Got something to say?
